Rules / System of Play

The Swiss Cup Basel is being played by 16 teams divided into 4 groups of 4 teams each. All matches are played exclusively against teams from other groups (out of the group). At the end an overall ranking is drawn up. The top 4 teams qualify directly for the playoffs. The teams ranked 5th to 12th compete in a tie-breaker, from which a further 4 playoff teams will be qualified.

Practice & LSD

Each team is granted a practice time of 5 minutes; the first practice begins at the scheduled match time.

The team listed first on the scoreboard plays with red stones and plays the LSD clockwise. The other team plays with yellow stones and plays the LSD anti-clockwise.

If the LSD lands exactly on the button, another LSD must be played without sweeping.

All LSD stones are played towards the home end.

 

Group Games & Qualification for the Playoffs

All matches are played over 8 ends.

If the score is tied after 8 ends, a shootout will decide the winner.

The team that would have had the hammer decides whether to play the draw first or second. Both teams may choose the same side. There are no trial draws.

If no winner can be determined after the first shootout, further shootouts will follow without sweeping until a winner is determined. The same team starts each time.

Points

Win after regular time: 3 points
-  Win in a shootout: 2 points
-  Loss in a shootout: 1 point
-  Loss after regular time: 0 point

There are no time-outs in the group matches.

An early forfeit is possible at any time.

The points scored in the group matches determine the overall ranking.

In the event of a tie, the DSC will decide the ranking. Each team’s worst LSD result will be discarded and not included in the DSC’s overall standings.

Tie-breaker

Each team is granted a practice time of 5 minutes; the first practice begins at the scheduled match time. The higher ranked team of the group stage selects the hammer or the stone colour. The team with the hammer in the 1st end begins the practice (without LSD).

 

Playoffs

Each team is granted a practice time of 5 minutes; the first practice begins at the scheduled match time. The higher ranked team of the group stage selects the hammer or the stone colour. The team with the hammer in the 1st end begins the practice (without LSD).

The matches in the playoffs are limited to 30 minutes thinking time and are played with 1-minute end breaks but without a mid-game break.

An early forfeit is possible at any time.

In the event of a tie after 8 ends, an extra end is played. If the result is still undecided, the team that had to start the extra end wins.

The extra end is played towards the home end.

In the playoffs each team is entitled to one time-out during regular playing time and one time-out during the extra end.

The coach may only enter the field of play wearing curling shoes.

Only the coach of the team taking the time-out may communicate with the team.

 

The waiver of a playoff game is subject to the following fine:
Final: CHF 3,000.00, 1/2 & 1/4 -Finals: CHF 1,000.00.

 

The tournament is conducted in accordance with the rules of the World Curling Federation (WCF).
In the event of any discrepancies, the supervisors’ decision is final.
